The well-being and health of our children are of utmost importance. But until today, they haven't had any protection in case of a fire, a major natural disaster, a nuclear accident, or a terrorist strike.
The first reusable CBRN full-face respirator explicitly made for children's requirements is the MIRA Safety MD-1 Children's Gas Mask.
The MD-1 uses the same 40 mm filters as most adult masks, allowing you to rely on a single supply of canisters (like our state-of-the-art MIRA canister filters that feature an extended 20-year shelf life) to maximize your chances of survival in a disaster. This is in contrast to pricey, single-use alternatives. Additionally, it works with add-ons like our PAPR (Powered Air-Purifying Respirator).
With an improved head harness, modernized materials, and compatibility with 40 mm NATO threaded filters, MIRA adapted and improved this rigid design to bring it into the twenty-first century. The original respirator was made for children to satisfy the stringent safety requirements of the government of Yugoslavia.
Young children must use proper respiratory protection because they are still developing. They are far more vulnerable to respiratory problems and airborne pollutants, which could have a lifelong negative impact on their health. This is particularly true with radioactive pollutants, which can raise the risk of developing cancer and other serious illnesses.
This kid-sized gas mask weighs much less than an adult-sized one and has improved airflow for less effort and easier breathing. It weighs about 18 ounces when using the filter hose attachment (supplied).

There are two sizes available for the MD-1 children's gas mask:

Storage
Standard MD-1 Children's Gas Masks must be cold, dark, dust-free, frequently ventilated, and free from extreme temperature changes. Relative humidity can reach 60%, with temperatures ranging from 5 to 25 degrees Celsius. Products that are being stored shouldn't be exposed to direct sunlight or radiant heat. The masks should be kept in a different storage area than fuel, lubricants, solvents, or other combustible materials.
Avoid keeping any electrical equipment or appliances that create ozone while operating nearby or close to storage areas.
When storing the masks, do not allow the rubber components of the facepiece and interior mask to deform. Regularly check if gas masks are properly sealing to the wearer's face.
NOTE: A "balzloon" test is advised to ensure a mask can be worn safely in an emergency because all negative-pressure gas masks have breathing resistance. Only kids who can blow up a balloon with their breath should use a regular negative-pressure gas mask.
Even if your child passes the balloon test, we strongly advise combining the MD-1 Children's Gas Mask with a Powered Air-Purifying Respirator (PAPR) to lessen fatigue. To increase airflow and create positive pressure for additional defense against airborne pollutants, PAPRs use a motorized fan unit. Due to its adaptability, any 40 mm NATO standard gas mask can be worn with MIRA Safety's PAPR unit.
